English Toy Spaniel :: Small Dog Breeds

English Toy Spaniel

The English Toy Spaniel is known as the King Charles Spaniel outside of North America. The English Toy or Charlie is one of the most cheerful, adaptable and undemanding of all the toy dogs. Charlie is playful, intelligent, cheerful, affectionate and very adaptable to apartment living. The English Toy makes a great lap dog and companion dog for seniors that don’t want too active a breed. Toddlers and small children are too rough for the English Toy but it will adapt well to family life and get along with older considerate children and even other pets. Charlie loves to be with his people and to be spoiled and pampered. The English Toy can be somewhat willful and like a true aristocrat feels that commands are not always to be obeyed. This breed shows little interest in strangers and barks very little but early socialisation is useful. Charlie is intelligent and can be quick to grasp what is required but some reward based obedience training will be necessary. A first-time dog owner will do fine with this breed.

The English Toy Spaniel is a compact and square toy dog with a square, wide and deep muzzle and long hanging ears The legs, chest, ears and tail are heavily feathered and the coat is long and silky with straight to slightly wavy hair. The English Toy is smaller than its more popular relative, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. In Canada and the US the King Charles Spaniel comes in four color varieties. The four varieties are: the Bleinham with chestnut markings on a white background; the Prince Charles tricolour with reddish brown markings on a black and white background; the King Charles with tan markings on a black background; and the Ruby which is a solid chestnut red. This breed stands about 10 to 11 inches tall at the withers and weighs less than 12 pounds. The English Toy is a member of the American Kennel Club (AKC) Toy Dog Group and was ranked 123rd in 2005 AKC breed registrations.

The King Charles and the Cavalier were developed in England in the 16th century as companion and lap dogs for wealthy aristocratic ladies. The King Charles probably resulted from crossbreeding with some Chinese or Japanese breeds like the Pekinese, Pug or Japanese Chin. Charlie gets most of the exercise it needs by playing inside but will enjoy playing in the back yard or being taken for a walk if the weather is not too hot and humid.

The English Toys coat should be thoroughly brushed twice a week, paying special attention to the hair on the ears, chest and legs. The facial folds can be treated with a lotion to prevent tear stains. Check the ears regularly and keep the claws clipped short and remove any excess hair between the pads of the feet. English Toys can be expected to live for about 10 to 12 years. Some common health issues include: respiratory problems, eye disorders and dislocation of the kneecap. In hot and humid weather, keep Charlie cool and air conditioned.
