Havanese
The Havanese is a delightful little toy dog that is happy, playful, affectionate and gentle. These dogs are trouble-free companions, which love to be with people and be the center of attention. The Havanese is very intelligent and loves to show his amazing group of tricks to get everybody’s attention. Young children can be too rough for this gentle toy breed but they will adapt well to older considerate children and other family pets. This breed loves to be involved in all the family’s daily activities but will try to run the household unless it receives some reward-based obedience training. Early socialization will be necessary to overcome it’s timidity towards strangers and curb this breeds tendency to bark. This dog does well with first-time owners.
The cheerful Havanese is a member of the Bichon family which includes the Maltese and Bichon Frise. The breed is one of the larger and sturdier toy dog breeds. The long-haired coat is soft, wavy and silky and there is no undercoat. The coat can be a solid color such as white, cream, fawn, brown, black or gray or the breed can be white with spots of any of the aforementioned colors. Havanese stand from 8 to 11 inches tall at the withers and should weigh less than 13.5 pounds. This breed is a member of the American Kennel Club Toy Group and was ranked 52nd in 2005 registrations.
The Havanese probably originated in the Mediterranean region and is related to the Bichon family. This breed was a great favorite of the upper class in Cuba and many left Cuba for the US during the Cuban Revolution. Harvanese are quite active indoors and can adapt to apartment living if they get outside for a walk during the day. Havanese are quite intelligent and many dogs can be trained for agility and obedience competitions. The Havanese should be thoroughly brushed and then combed with a coarse comb two or three times per week. A special lotion can be applied before grooming to prevent damage to the hair. Havanese are a non-shedding or low-shedding dog breed and are said to be hypoallergenic when properly groomed. This breed is expected to live for 13 to 15 years and are generally quite healthy with few common health problems. Some bloodlines have exhibited low thyroid, allergies and skin conditions.
