Chinese Crested :: Small Dog Breeds

Chinese Crested

The Chinese Crested is a graceful, spirited, happy, intelligent and animated dog that needs a lot of personal interaction with its owner. These agile small dogs are very good climbers and jumpers and can grip toys and other objects with their paws. The breed adores its family and owner and gets along well with older children, other dogs and pets. Active and inquisitive indoors, the Cresteds need early training while puppies to keep their desire for activity under control. This breed is intelligent and fairly easy to train except when it comes to housetraining. Housetraining can be very difficult and a cat litter box might be considered in winter weather. The Chinese Cresteds make ideal companions for elderly apartment dwellers or shut-ins that can’t get outside to exercise their dogs. Somewhat suspicious of strangers, the Cresteds make good watchdogs. A first-time dog owner would do well with this breed.

The Chinese Crested is a lively and graceful toy dog breed. There are two varieties of Chinese Cresteds – The Hairless and the Powder Puff. The Hairless Chinese Cresteds have a fine grained smooth skin that seems warm to the touch. The Hairless Cresteds have a crest of hair on their heads, tufted feet and plumed tails. The Powder Puff Chinese Cresteds have a soft silky and abundant coat. All colours and colour combinations are permitted for both varieties of Chinese Cresteds. This breed is approximately 9 to 13 inches tall at the withers and weighs less than 13 pounds. The Crested is a member of the American Kennel Club (AKC) Toy Dog Group. The Chinese Crested was ranked 53rd in 2005 AKC breed registrations.

Possibly discovered by Chinese traders in Mexico or Africa, the origin of this breed is still unknown. Both Hairless and Powder Puff varieties can be found in the same litter and the two Crested varieties are often interbred. The Crested has evolved to be a superb apartment dog. The Crested gets sufficient exercise chasing a ball indoors in inclement weather but does enjoy a run outside in a safe enclosed area. Cresteds need coats or sweaters in the winter to keep warm when they go outside. In the summer this toy breed needs a shirt or T-shirt to prevent sunburn.

The Hairless Crested needs regular skin care including baths, moisturizers and even sun block. This toy’s skin should be kept supple and smooth and prevented from drying out. The Chinese Powder Puff needs regular brushing, trimming and bathing. The Cresteds sweat through glands in their feet and skin so daily sponge and weekly baths are recommended. This breed is a non-shedding or very light shedding dog and if properly groomed is often referred to as ‘hypoallergenic’. The Crested can be expected to live for 13 to 15 years and is generally quite hardy. The Hairless Crested suffers from bad teeth, sunburn and is susceptible to skin cancer.
