Italian Greyhounds are cheerful, gentle, quiet and affectionate dogs but are also quite playful and active. These amiable and sweet-natured toy Greyhounds are devoted companion dogs. They want to be with you all the time. They are reserved and timid with strangers but quite demonstrative with family members. These dogs get along well with other family pets and older children. Toy Greyhounds love to run and chase small animals and should be kept on-leash while walking. This breed can easily adapt to apartment living if given regular exercise. The breed is intelligent and training can be best carried out using food rewards. Toy Greyhounds can be difficult to housetrain in cold or wet climates because they don’t like to go outside in inclement weather. Early socialization will be necessary to overcome it’s timidity towards strangers. This dog does well with first-time owners.

The Italian Greyhound is one of the quietest and most amiable of all the toy dog breeds. This slim and fragile looking breed is quite fast and still capable of hunting small game. The elegant toy Greyhound has a chiseled body with a deep narrow chest and long narrow head with small folded ears. The Italian’s coat is smooth and short and the color can be anything but brindle or black and tan. . Italian Greyhounds stand from 13 to 15 inches tall at the withers and weigh from 7 to 13 pounds. This breed is a member of the American Kennel Club Toy Group and was ranked 59th in 2006 registrations.

Evidence of the Italian Greyhound dates back more than two thousand years when they appeared in artwork in areas around the Mediterranean These toy Greyhounds were a favorite dog of Italian nobility during the Middle Ages and came to England in the 17th century. It reached its peak of popularity during the reign of Queen Victoria. This toy breed was very fast and was actually used for hunting rabbits. Its numbers declined in England and it almost disappeared after the Second World War. However, breeders in the US and other countries were able to restore the breed in Europe. Italian Greyhounds get lots of exercise running around the home but like to go on long walks. Remember to keep this breed on a leash because they love to chase small animals and can jump over fences.

Italians need little grooming beyond a shine with a cloth and shed very little. They may be suitable for people with allergies. The breed is quite healthy and can be expected to live from 12 to 16 years. Like most toy dogs, these breed is susceptible to periodontal disease. Other common health problems include epilepsy, leg fractures, patellar luxation and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Italian Greyhounds have sensitive skin and need a very soft bed and a sweater in cool weather.
