Cockapoo and Maltipoo :: Small Dog Breeds

The Cockapoo

The Cockapoo is a designer dog that results from a cross between the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. Designer dogs are really hybrid or cross-breed dogs that have been developed to try and achieve some positive characteristics from the founding pure-bred dog breeds. You can buy first generation or multi-generational designer dogs. First generation puppies will have some combination of the breeding parents’ characteristics but these will be difficult to predict. The Cockapoo hybrid was developed to try and pass on the low-shedding hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle and the sweet disposition of the Cocker Spaniel to the new hybrid dog breed. This may or may not occur in a first generation hybrid. Multi-generational designer dogs are developed when the resulting hybrids with the desired characteristics (occasionally adding back in one of the founding breeds), are bred over many generations. After some period of time, this hybrid will start to breed true and the breeder will be able to tell you what the major characteristics of the puppy will be. It is expected that the hybrid will have fewer potential inherited diseases than the founding breeds. This loyal, affectionate and friendly dog has four sizes dictated by the Cockapoo Club of America: teacup toy (under six pounds), toy (7 to 12 pounds), miniature (13 to 18 pounds) and the maxi (19 and over pounds). Bred to be primarily a family dog that is good with children and has hypoallergenic and low dander properties, this cross’ unique intelligence and eagerness to please makes him a joy to train. A minimum of a twice weekly grooming is required to keep this designer dog looking sharp. The usual coat color of the Cockapoo is generally white or off white, but a wide variety of colors and mixes can be expected.

Maltipoo

Another popular designer dog is the Maltipoo or Maltepoo which is a cross between a Maltese Terrier and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Many of the –poo hybrids were developed to try and pass on the low-shedding hypoallergenic coats of the Poodles to the new hybrid dog breed. This is not a concern with the Maltipoo because both founding parents are non-shedding. The Maltipoo is a delightful small toy dog which usually weighs between 5 and 12 pounds. They are fairly active and love to chase a ball but do fine in an apartment and don’t need a lot of outdoor exercise. Since both founding parents are non-shedding the Maltipoo will be hypoallergenic or non–shedding as well. These dogs are too small for toddlers but do great with older considerate children and thrive with elderly individuals. The Maltese is intelligent, loving, gentle and cheerful with lots of personality. This toy dog adores and wants to please his master, so it is fairly easy to train and enjoys obedience training. The Toy Poodle is also smart and cheerful but a little more difficult to train. It follows that the resulting hybrid Maltipoo will be intelligent, loving, gentle and cheerful. However training the Maltipoo will be more difficult than the Maltese. The Maltipoo’s coat will be soft and wavy to curly but will have a range of textures from the Maltese to the Poodle. Grooming and bathing will be required on a regular basis.
