Toy Dog Breeds :: Small Dog Breeds

Small Dogs

The small dogs grouping that is used here is solely related to size. The small dog list includes all the American Kennel Club (AKC) dog breeds less than 25 pounds, except for the AKC Toy Group of breeds discussed in the Toy Dog section. Almost all of these small dogs belong to either the AKC Non-Sporting Group or the Terrier Group. The only exceptions are the Basenji and the Dachshund (Miniature) from the Hound Group. The Non-Sporting Dog Group seems to include dog breeds that didn’t fit well into any of the other groups and are a diverse group with a wide range of size, coat and personality.

The Terrier Group includes those small and lively terrier breeds that were mainly developed in Great Britain to hunt burrowing small animals. These dog breeds have a distinctive personality which is feisty and energetic. Many terriers have little tolerance for other pets and animals including other dogs. This feistiness is left over from their development as hunters of rodents and small animals. Of course these small dog breeds have been domesticated and make great pets but they are still fairly active and require firm handling. Many terriers have wiry coats that require a special grooming technique called “stripping” in order to remove the dead hair and properly maintain their appearance.
The following is a list of small dogs and the AKC group designation for the non-Terrier breeds as well as a list of breeds that are: best with children; non-shedding or low shedding; good watchdogs; and active companions.
